At TAILS Lantau, we believe every animal deserves a chance at life, love, and dignity—even those who don’t fit the typical idea of a "perfect pet." As part of our mission to be a voice for the voiceless, we urgently share the story of Maxi and Moritz, two elderly Mongrels well-known to many in Mui Wo. These dogs have spent their entire lives outdoors and now face the heartbreaking possibility of being put to sleep.
Recently, a complaint was made to AFCD about the dogs continually hanging around a residential building. This led to one of the dogs being picked up by AFCD and the realisation that they will try to come back to take the other one as well. We understand that not everyone is comfortable with stray dogs near their homes, but we also know that Maxi and Moritz are not a threat. They are survivors, who have peacefully lived outdoors their entire lives.
As such, we want to appeal to reach out to the person who made the complaint, to see if they would be willing to speak to us so we can help to understand their concerns and try to find a better way forward.
Please reach out to us directly and confidentially so we can discuss the situation further. We are committed to handling all concerns responsibly and anonymously, with no animosity or judgement on our side, we only want to help. We want to resolve this in a way that protects both the community and these dogs. We kindly ask for patience and understanding in the meantime though as relocating these dogs to another area will require a lot of work.
Maxi and Moritz, two easy-going, unassuming dogs, were once deeply loved by their owner, a local man who cared for them until his passing. After he was gone, the dogs remained in the only home they’ve ever known—the quiet street corner they were familiar with, perhaps waiting for their beloved human to return. Though she is unable to adopt them, a kind-hearted community member has stepped in, feeding and checking on them daily to ensure their safety. The dogs are cared for and as happy as they can possibly be.
The challenge with Maxi and Moritz is that they have lived outdoors their entire lives and feel at home in the area and with the people they know. Attempts to bring them inside, especially during typhoons, have shown how uncomfortable they are in an indoor environment. They resist, drawn to the familiarity of the streets they’ve always known. TAILS Lantau previously found a home for them, but the dogs quickly dug their way out and returned to the only place they feel secure. Unfortunately, they don’t understand that some see them as an eyesore or a nuisance in the area.
This independence has led to complications. With the AFCD now involved, Maxi and Moritz’s future looks bleak without swift action. When elderly dogs like them end up with the AFCD, especially ones that aren’t leash-trained, their chances of making it out are slim.
TAILS Lantau is working closely with the AFCD, but the reality is this: the dogs must be licensed to someone who can offer a secure home. We do not have a physical shelter; we rely entirely on a growing network of private foster homes and adopters to take in animals. In this case, we urgently need someone with a secure garden or outdoor space to step forward, either as a foster or an adopter. We realise that finding the right solution may take time, and there is a chance that Maxi and Moritz may somehow end up back where they feel most comfortable—outside the only area they’ve ever known.
We appeal to the community to consider Maxi and Moritz’s unique situation. These dogs are not nuisances or threats; they cause no trouble beyond occasionally seeking shelter under a parked car for shade. They are part of our community’s history, having lived peacefully among us for years.
This is a complex situation, and the responsibility of licensing and caring for Maxi and Moritz comes with challenges, including the potential for future complaints. But we are resolute in our mission to see this through and ensure these dogs receive the care and respect they deserve. As dog lovers ourselves, we all hope that if something were to happen to us, someone would step up for our dogs, even those that may be seen as “unhomeable.”
